Crear una única imagen con inteligencia artificial consume la misma energía que cargar un móvil


La revolución digital no solo ha transformado la forma en que interactuamos con la tecnología, sino también ha revelado el impacto ambiental de las inteligencias artificiales generativas. Un reciente estudio ha arrojado luz sobre el costo energético de diferentes tareas de inteligencia artificial, destacando que la creación de imágenes es la más costosa y contaminante de todas.


¿Cuánto consume la Inteligencia Artificial Generativa?

La inteligencia artificial generativa, responsable de la creación de contenido como imágenes, se ha convertido en una parte integral de la revolución digital. Sin embargo, un estudio realizado por la startup Hugging Face y la Universidad Carnegie Mellon ha revelado que la generación de imágenes con inteligencia artificial consume una cantidad sorprendente de energía. De hecho, crear una sola imagen equivale a gastar la carga completa de un teléfono móvil.


Según el estudio, ejecutar 1,000 acciones de generación de texto en comparación con la creación de 1,000 imágenes muestra una diferencia significativa en el consumo de energía. Mientras que la generación de texto apenas consume el 16% de la batería de un celular, la creación de imágenes emite una cantidad considerable de carbono, equiparable a conducir un automóvil a gasolina en un trayecto de 6.5 kilómetros.


Adaptándolo a precios, en general, una carga de teléfono móvil consume entre 0,015 y 0,030 kWh. Esto equivale a entre 0,03 y 0,06 euros, dependiendo del precio del kWh en tu zona y dependiendo de la comercializadora contratada. Los precios entre comercializadoras grandes como Endesa o comercializadoras pequeñas como Podo puede suponer una pequeña variación del precio, aunque esta estimación nos puede hacer un idea del consumo que estamos comparando con la creación de imágenes por IA.

El impacto de los modelos grandes generativos

Los investigadores también exploraron la diferencia entre el uso de modelos grandes generativos, como ChatGPT o Bard, y modelos más pequeños diseñados para tareas específicas. La conclusión fue clara: los modelos grandes consumen mucha más energía, ya que intentan realizar varias tareas simultáneamente, como generar, clasificar y resumir texto. Este descubrimiento lleva a considerar la eficiencia energética al elegir modelos de inteligencia artificial para tareas específicas.


El impacto ambiental de la inteligencia artificial va más allá del consumo de energía. La cantidad de agua necesaria para enfriar los servidores que alojan productos como ChatGPT es asombrosa. En el caso del entrenamiento de GPT-3, se utilizaron 700,000 litros de agua dulce, equivalente a la producción de 370 automóviles BMW o 320 vehículos eléctricos Tesla.
